Although Maharashtra has increased growth in the development sector, the crime and security of women still remain an issue. Mumbai leads the highest number of crime incidence against women with an all India rank on 2nd while Pune and Nagpur are the 6th and 9th cities with the highest level of crimes. In the past three years, the number of cases reported keeps increasing every year since 2014. While 814 cases were reported in Nagpur, 1327 in Pune and 3974 in Mumbai in the year of 2014, the figures doubled by 2016 and Nagpur reported 1379, 2131 cases in Pune and 5128 in Mumbai. Mumbai has a minimum of 12.3 percent share of crimes against women right after Delhi leading with 33.1 percent of total crimes.
These data reflect a matter of grave concern as security and safety of women pose a question on the rights and obligations of the constitution provided to women. 85.2 percent of women in Mumbai experience cases of molestation, rape, sexual assault, and violation of personal space. Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur all come under the urban and highly populated metro cities with increased development and progress in all fields and spheres of life yet respect and security of women lack behind. Although in the overall rank of these cities based on crime rate, Maharashtrian cities come after Delhi, Bihar and Patna with Nagpur in 5th place, Pune in 8th and Mumbai in 12th.
It is important the government ensures the safety of women and protection from harm by providing rehab centers for women, help lifelines and counselors, free and accessible rights and safeguard the rights of women in India.
